Free AI phone assistant: what exists and what doesn't

A completely free AI phone assistant, one that answers your business number, understands what the caller wants, books the appointment and passes urgent calls to you, does not exist today. What does exist are free tools that cover part of that job: smartphone call screening, carrier voicemail, WhatsApp Business auto-replies, open-source software and trial credits from developer platforms. Sometimes they are enough, but it helps to know what each one does and where the cost actually sits.

This guide goes through them one by one, as of October 2026, with notes on what works in Europe and in languages other than English.

Why "free" is hard on the phone

A call handled by AI relies on several services that someone pays for: a phone number and call traffic, speech-to-text, a language model that decides what to say, a synthetic voice, and a connection to your calendar or booking system. On top of that comes the setup work: opening hours, services, frequent questions, and rules for passing a call to a person.

When an offer is free, one of three things is usually true:

  • it does only part of the job (screens, records a message, replies in writing);
  • it is free up to a limit, in minutes or credits, and then becomes paid;
  • the software is free, while the infrastructure and the time are on you.

Nothing wrong with that, as long as you know it before you trust it with your customers' calls.

Smartphone call screening

Recent smartphones can answer on your behalf, but coverage depends heavily on country and language.

  • Google Pixel. Manual call screening lets the Assistant ask who is calling and why, and shows you a transcript. Automatic screening of unknown numbers is limited to Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK and the US, according to Google's help page.
  • iPhone. Call Screening and Live Voicemail are available only in the languages listed on Apple's feature availability page, which does not include Italian, for instance.
  • Samsung Galaxy. Bixby Text Call answers, asks the reason for the call and shows you the transcript; it has supported several languages, Italian included, since 2023.

These features are built to protect a person from unwanted calls, not to serve customers. They run on one person's phone, don't book appointments and know nothing about your services or hours. If your business number is a landline or a PBX, they don't apply at all.

Carrier voicemail

The most common free tool. Italy's TIM, for example, states that activating voicemail is free, while the cost of calling in to listen depends on your plan. Terms differ by carrier, so check your own contract.

The limit is well known: many callers don't leave a message. According to Moneypenny's Small Business Call Report, 69% of people who call a small business and get no answer don't leave a voicemail. If you rely on voicemail, at least write a good greeting: our guide to professional voicemail greetings has 12 examples, and the comparison AI phone assistant vs voicemail explains the difference.

WhatsApp Business auto-replies

The WhatsApp Business app lets you set an automatic greeting message, sent on first contact or after 14 days of inactivity, and an away message. Useful for people who write to you, but it doesn't answer the phone: callers still hit a ringing or busy line. It works well alongside a phone solution, for example to send a booking link to someone who just messaged.

Open-source software

If you have technical skills, you can build a voice agent with free frameworks such as LiveKit Agents (Apache 2.0) or Pipecat (BSD). They are serious projects, used by companies too.

The software is free; the rest isn't. You need a telephony provider for the number and traffic, a speech-to-text service, a language model and text-to-speech, almost always billed by usage. Then there is the work: designing the agent's behaviour, connecting the calendar, handling errors, updating it when models change and fixing it when something breaks. For a small business without an in-house developer, "free" here means moving the cost from the invoice to someone's hours.

Trial credits from developer platforms

Most voice-agent platforms give you starting credit. As of October 2026, Vapi lists $5 in free credits and Retell AI $10. They are for testing the technology, not for running a business phone line: the credit goes quickly, the tools are built for developers, and setup is on you.

One thing that applies to free tools too: data

A tool that records or transcribes calls processes your customers' personal data, whether or not you pay for it. In the EU, a provider handling that data on your behalf is a processor under Article 28 of the GDPR, and you need an agreement that governs it, as the EDPB guidelines 07/2020 explain. Before switching on a trial, check where recordings end up and who can access them. And since 2 August 2026, people talking to an AI must be told so: see our article on the AI Act transparency obligations.

Checklist before choosing a free offer

  1. How much does it really cover? Minutes, credits or days, and what happens when they run out.
  2. Does it use your number? Many trials give you a new one, but customers call the one they already have.
  3. Does it read and write your calendar? Without that, the AI collects requests but can't close bookings.
  4. How does it pass a call to a person? Urgent calls must reach you right away.
  5. Does it sound natural in your customers' language? Test it with real requests, accents and background noise.
  6. Who sets it up? If it's you, count the hours.
  7. Where does the data live? Processing agreement, recording retention, servers.
  8. What does it cost afterwards? The ongoing price is the one that matters for your budget.

When a managed service makes sense

If you get few calls and only need to know who rang, good voicemail plus WhatsApp Business may be enough. When missed calls start turning into lost customers, or the phone keeps interrupting your work, you need an AI phone assistant that answers your business number around the clock, books, moves and cancels appointments in your calendar, and transfers important calls to a person. yourang.ai works with landlines, VoIP, PBXs and mobiles without changing your number, and always introduces itself as an AI assistant.

To see what doing it properly costs, read our guide on how much an AI phone assistant costs; current prices are on the pricing page. The quickest way to decide is to hear it at work: book a demo and we'll set it up on a case like yours, from the opening line to the appointment in your calendar.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a free AI phone assistant for a business?

Not in full: a service that answers your business number, holds a conversation, books appointments and passes urgent calls to a person always has telephony, voice-model and setup costs. What you can get for free are pieces of the job: smartphone call screening, carrier voicemail, WhatsApp Business auto-replies, open-source software and trial credits.

Does iPhone Call Screening work in every language?

No. Apple's feature availability page lists a limited set of languages for Call Screening and Live Voicemail; Italian, for example, is not among them. On Google Pixel, automatic call screening is limited to a handful of countries.

Can I build an AI phone assistant with open-source software?

Yes, frameworks such as LiveKit Agents (Apache 2.0) and Pipecat (BSD) are free. You still pay for the phone number, call minutes, speech-to-text, the language model and text-to-speech, plus development and maintenance time.

What should I check before choosing a free offer?

How many minutes or credits it includes, whether it works with your existing number, whether it reads and writes your calendar, how it hands calls to a person, where data is processed and who the data processor is, and what it costs once the trial ends.

Voicemail records a message, if the caller leaves one. An AI phone assistant answers, understands the request and often resolves it during the call. Here are the practical differences, a comparison table and the cases where voicemail is still enough.
